Confidence & Career Course: Beyond the Dress Code
For starters, I love going to institutions where I've gotten certifications or where my mother is an alumnus, and in this case, it was both! DePaul University here in Chicago held a conference with Corporate Curly called Confidence and Career Course, where, beyond the dress code, it was discussed how to gain confidence in your corporate career and how that can translate to your wardrobe!
While I didn't speak too much until the Q&A section, it was a great experience. Learning how to incorporate your personality into corporate can seem intimidating. Often, people imitate those in higher positions, and while imitation is the highest form of flattery, you then get lost in the shades of grey.
I understand more than anyone that corporate is scary. My mother has always been a corporate woman, and I love that woman to death, but she can be scary. I've gone to work with that woman, and she strives for excellence, not perfection, so people around her are always bringing their A-game. On top of being the big bitch in charge, her fashion was always to a T of how someone in corporate should dress while adding her favorite things like color, patterns, and textures.
I am my mother's stylist and have been for the last 8 years (she's the Zendaya to my Law but make it corporate); my ability to style corporate has changed with the times. I could give a crash course on how to add colors, textures, and patterns to your corporate wardrobe! One day, I will; today, I'm just talking about how much conferences/events like the one at DePaul can help students have a smoother transition into corporate life. It's intimidating enough as is; knowing how to dress for it or having a stylist to help can relieve a bit of that stress!
